## Thermoplastic Marking in Toronto, Line by Line

Thermoplastic line marking in Toronto for zones where standard paint cannot survive a winter. Hot-applied thermoplastic is melted in a kettle and applied at about 400F, fusing to asphalt with intermix and drop-on glass beads for retroreflectivity. It lasts 3-5 years against salt, snowplows and freeze-thaw, about 3x the life of standard traffic paint, and cures in minutes so lanes reopen fast.

- $8-$18 per linear foot
- 3-5 year life, about 3x standard paint
- Applied at roughly 400F, cures in minutes
- Intermix + drop-on glass beads for night retroreflectivity

Why Lines Fail

## Why Does Standard Paint Fail Where Thermoplastic Survives?

Traffic paint is a thin film. In the zones that take the most abuse, a thin film is not enough to last a Toronto winter.

### Snowplow blades

Plow blades scrape the top layer off every pass. A paint film measured in thousandths of an inch is gone by March. Thermoplastic is applied many times thicker.

### Salt and freeze-thaw

Salt brine and 70-90 freeze-thaw cycles lift paint from the surface. Thermoplastic fuses to warm asphalt, so there is no film to lift.

### Night visibility loss

Paint loses its glass beads quickly. Thermoplastic has beads mixed through it, so fresh beads keep surfacing as the line wears.

**Our fix:** For fire routes, crosswalks, stop bars, entrance arrows and forklift lanes, thermoplastic costs more once and far less over five years.

## What Is Hot-Applied Thermoplastic?

Thermoplastic line marking in Toronto uses a solid compound of resins, pigment, filler and glass beads. It is melted in a thermoplastic kettle and applied at about 400F. On asphalt it fuses with the surface instead of sitting on top like paint. We apply it with a screed box applicator for wide lines and symbols, and hand-liner extrusion for long runs. Drop-on glass beads go onto the hot surface for immediate retroreflectivity, measured in mcd/m2/lux. Intermix beads inside the material keep surfacing as the line wears.

The result is a line many times thicker than traffic paint. It is built for snowplows, salt and the 70-90 freeze-thaw cycles a Toronto winter brings. Alkyd thermoplastic meeting AASHTO M249 is our standard spec.

## Where Thermoplastic Makes Sense

- Fire route marking

    [/fire-route-marking-toronto/ →](/fire-route-marking-toronto/)

     that has to stay inspection-ready
- Forklift lane safety marking

    [/forklift-lane-safety-marking-toronto/ →](/forklift-lane-safety-marking-toronto/)

     and loading approaches
- Pedestrian crosswalk painting

    [/pedestrian-crosswalk-painting-toronto/ →](/pedestrian-crosswalk-painting-toronto/)

     at plaza entrances and schools
- Stop bars, arrows and symbols at the busiest turns in any lot

For the standard stalls at the back of a plaza, paint is still the smarter spend. Most of our quotes mix both.

## Material Comparison: Paint vs Thermoplastic vs Tape

The comparison table below shows typical life, cure time and price for each material. Here is the short version. Paint is cheapest per application. Thermoplastic is cheapest per year in high-wear zones. Preformed cold-applied tape wins at crosswalks where five to seven years of life matters most.

## What Affects Thermoplastic Pricing?

Line width, the share of arrows and lettering versus straight lines, surface condition and access all move the price within the $8-$18 per linear foot range. Removing old paint and pre-heating cold asphalt add prep time. You see each item on the written quote.

How It Works

## How Does Our Thermoplastic Marking Process Work?

Four steps from first call to reopened lot, with nothing added after the quote.

1. STEP 01

    ### Measure and recommend

We measure linear feet per zone and flag where thermoplastic, paint or preformed tape makes sense, then quote each option in writing.

2. STEP 02

    ### Prep and pre-heat

Old paint and debris come off. On cold or aged asphalt we pre-heat with infrared so the material fuses properly.

3. STEP 03

    ### Apply at 400F

Material is melted in the kettle and applied by screed box or hand liner extrusion, with drop-on glass beads on the hot surface.

4. STEP 04

    ### Cool and reopen

Thermoplastic hardens in minutes as it cools. Lanes and fire routes reopen almost immediately.

Client Results

## Toronto Clients on Our Thermoplastic Marking

Derek M.

Industrial property manager, Weston

$7,800 project

> "We used to repaint the truck apron arrows every April. Thermoplastic went down in one night two winters ago and the plows have not touched it."

Sandra Y.

Campus facilities lead, Downsview

$9,450 project

> "They priced the crosswalks in paint and thermoplastic on one page. The thermoplastic paid for itself by year three on their numbers, and so far that is holding up."

Hamid S.

Property manager, Leaside

$2,600 project

> "Fire Prevention flagged our faded fire route twice. Line Painting Toronto quoted per linear foot the same day, sent the COI the next morning and laid thermoplastic curbs and FIRE ROUTE lettering in one night. The re-inspection was a formality, and the thermoplastic means we are not repainting every spring anymore."

Dmitri K.

Property manager, Yorkville

$4,200 project

> "They restriped our Yorkville plaza overnight, we never closed, every stall was crisp by 7am open. Zero complaints from tenants. First time in five years we did not lose a Saturday to restriping."

Priya M.

Industrial operator, Scarborough

$18,500 project

> "We needed thermoplastic for the forklift lanes in our Scarborough warehouse. Three years later still sharp, no fade. WSIB inspection passed on first visit."

### How much does thermoplastic line marking cost in Toronto?

Hot-applied thermoplastic runs $8-$18 per linear foot depending on line width, symbol work and surface prep. Preformed tape runs $12-$25 per linear foot. Every job gets a written per-linear-foot quote.

### How long does thermoplastic last compared to paint?

In Toronto conditions thermoplastic typically lasts 3-5 years, about three times the 12-24 month life of standard traffic paint. Preformed tape can last 5-7 years at crosswalks and intersections.

### How fast can traffic drive on thermoplastic?

Within minutes. Thermoplastic hardens as it cools, so fire routes, lanes and crosswalks reopen almost as soon as the crew moves on.

### Can thermoplastic go on concrete?

Yes, with a compatible primer or sealer. It bonds best on asphalt, where it fuses with the surface. We test and prime concrete aprons and garage decks before applying.

### Can you apply thermoplastic in cold weather?

It tolerates cooler conditions than paint, especially with infrared pre-heating, but the surface still has to be dry. We extend the season into late fall for thermoplastic work.

### Where should I use thermoplastic instead of paint?

Fire routes, crosswalks, stop bars, entrance arrows, forklift lanes and loading approaches. Anywhere plows, turning traffic or forklifts wear paint out within a season.
